For many people, undertaking a job search is either a chore or a nightmare. With the right tools and job search help, however, a job search can be an adventure that lands you your dream job. Here are three tips to put you on the path to fulfilling careers.
Design a Plan
Just as you wouldn’t a house without a set of blueprints, you shouldn’t conduct a job search without a plan. Your plan should start with your goal. This isn’t the career objective that you state at the top of your resumes. Instead, your career goal should getting paid to do something you’re passionate about. Once you’ve determined your passion, the next step is to research what kinds of paid jobs will dovetail with your passion. From there, you need to determine the skills you need to attain that dream job. If you don’t have those skills, you should figure out the intermediate steps you need to take, such as enrolling in certain classes or accepting a lower-level position where you can receive on the job training, in order to achieve your goal.
Online Job Search
The Internet is an integral tool and can provide you with an abundance of job search help. You can certainly do your research on the Internet, but more importantly, you can conduct employment networking online. Once you know your career goals, you can identify websites designed for those who are already in the position you desire. What better way to conduct employment networking than to find mentors online?
Those industries with trade journals (and what industry doesn’t have a trade journal?) often have want ads in their journals. Your online job search should include regularly visiting trade journal sites to peruse their help wanted advertisements. Because you’ve pinpointed your career goal, you don’t even have to bother with the more general online job search sites. You can narrow your search and get on the inside track.
Resume Tips
When it comes to resumes, you have to think outside of the box. One of the best forms of job search help is what is termed resume cards. The size of business cards, these have your contact information and career goal on the front, and bullet points that highlight your experience and qualifications on the back. Essentially, it provides the benefits, familiarity, and acceptability of a business card with your most outstanding qualifications.
A resume card goes far to take the awkwardness out of one-on-one networking. You can easily let someone know that you’re looking for a position without having to sell your qualifications. And, because that person has your career goal and qualifications in printed form, he or she can pass it on to his or her contacts who may be looking for someone just like you. While resume cards don’t replace more traditional resumes, they can shorten your job search cycle dramatically.
When it comes to job search help, you can turn to comprehensive manuals that incorporate all of the standard job search techniques, as well as suggest more cutting edge approaches to distributing resumes, interviewing, and more. Keep in mind, though, that before you begin, it will serve you well to find your passion and make that the centerpiece of your career quest. Good luck!
